About Vanya

Direct from a sold-out run in London, Andrew Scott (Ripley, Fleabag, All of Us Strangers) brings to life multiple characters in Tony Award® winner Simon Stephen’s (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) radical new version of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.

Comedic and tragic, Chekhov’s examination of our shared humanity — our hopes, dreams, regrets — is thrust into sharp focus in this production co-created by acclaimed director Sam Yates.

Vanya explores the kaleidoscope of human emotions, harnessing the power of the intimate bond between actor and audience to delve deeper into the human psyche.

More information about Vanya

Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is a classic, revived often in the 125 years since its premiere. However, seeing a one-person version of the show is unique, and it takes a chameleon performer to embody multiple roles that span different ages, genders, and personalities. Andrew Scott is exactly that performer, playing characters rich in charm (as on Fleabag), suffering from depression (like in All of Us Strangers), or conniving to move up the economic ladder (as in Ripley). Scott is one of today’s most sought-after performers, and Vanya off Broadway offers a rare chance to see his talent up close.

He’s also no stranger to the stage: Winner of two Olivier Awards, Scott has wowed audiences in London with daring and comedic performances in high-profile shows such as Hamlet, Present Laughter, and Cock. Now, he makes his Off-Broadway debut with his London hit, bringing an intimate and unforgettable production to New York. Lovers of and newcomers to Chekhov will find plenty to appreciate in this tour de force.

What to watch for

  • You don't need previous knowledge of Chekhov or Uncle Vanya to enjoy this show: Simply prepare to be dazzled as Andrew Scott tells a timeless story of people falling in love with the wrong person as mortality sets in and yearning increases.
  • In a five-star review, Time Out said Scott’s “is a truly remarkable stage performance that seems to go beyond acting and on to something like a shamanic act of empathy.”
  • Vanya won multiple awards while in London, including the Olivier Award for Best Revival and Best Actor for Scott at the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards.
  • This is not the only one-person version of a classic coming to New York in spring 2025: Succession actor Sarah Snook will make her Broadway debut in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
